Much of our research deals with topics in water sustainability, and in particular, groundwater pollution. We address groundwater pollution problems by applying concepts in environmental microbiology, microbial ecology and biotechnology (otherwise known as "Environmental Biotechnology").

Currently, we are investigating the following topics:

  1. Evolution of pollutant biodegradation pathways in microorganisms.

  2. Development of nucleic acid- and protein-based methods for quantifying the abundance and functionality of pollutant-degrading organisms in the environment.

  3. Groundwater ecology at explosives-contaminated sites.

  4. Genomic approaches for discovery, characterization, and development of environmentally friendly biocatalysts.

I am always looking for motivated graduate students to join our group. If you would like to learn more about what specific projects are available, please contact me.
